The Zika Virus in Texas and the United States
The Zika virus has been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome. According to Wise (2016) the Zika virus has not only been associated with birth defects but with Guillain-Barre. Guillain-Barre syndrome results in the immune system attacking nerves causing temporary paralysis with the potential for severe paralysis and in some instances, death. Research published in the journal The Lancet on Feb. 29 confirmed a link between Zika and Guillain-Barre (Cao-Lormeau et al. , 2016).
Researchers at Texas Children Hospital’s and Houston Methodist Hospital announced they have developed the first rapid test for the Zika virus that can be performed in a hospital.
The Lancet has created a Zika virus resource center: Zika virus resource centre (The Lansat, 2016). The Center for Disease Control maintains a map of confirmed Zika cases in the United States. The CDC site tracks locally acquired infections and including pregnant women (CDC Zika Virus in the United States, 2016).
Texas Reports the Largest Numbers of Zika Virus Infections in the United States according to the CDC in early 2016.
